Kalamazoo
is the largest city in the southwest region of Michigan with a population of
around 74,000 and the county seat of Kalamazoo County. Home of Western Michigan
University (WMU) and the liberal arts school Kalamazoo College. Kalamazoo has
three local breweries and brewpubs. The best known is Bell’s Brewery, which has
expanded from its original location and sold by retails in many parts of the country.
Kalamazoo also has its own Arts Council that organizes the Art Hop on the first
Friday of each month, in which patrons circulate among downtown. Many groups
often perform at the downtown State Theatre, WMU’s Miller Auditorium and Wings
Stadium. The Kalamazoo Public Library was named “Library of the Year” in 2002
by Library Journal and The
Kalamazoo Ladies Library Association was the first woman's club organized in
Michigan and the third in the nation. Enjoy the biannual Kalamazoo Animation
Festival International (KAFI) hosted by Kalamazoo Valley Community College or
the large collection of art at the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts, which is the
city’s most prominent art museum.
